Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center

Work together in simulated space missions and explore through engineering challenges.

Operated by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, this six-day residential experience uses mission simulations, rocket building and engineering challenges to explore space science. Three age-specific programs add different levels of complexity while emphasizing teamwork and communication.

Courses & activities

Simulated space missions

Teams work through space-station, lunar or Mars scenarios; older groups tackle anomalies and longer mission simulations.

Astronaut-training simulators

Explore movement and astronaut-training concepts using equipment such as the one-sixth-gravity chair and multi-axis trainer.

Rockets and engineering design

Build and launch model rockets. Ages 12–14 tackle thermal protection; ages 15–18 add engineering projects such as rovers.

Team challenges

Aquatic team activities and age-specific challenge-course elements put communication into practice, with different content by program.

Advanced underwater training

Advanced Space Academy, ages 15–18, offers a neutral-buoyancy scuba experience subject to physician approval and camp medical clearance.

Camp features & life

A clear age progression

Space Camp serves ages 9–11, Space Academy 12–14 and Advanced Space Academy 15–18, allowing families to match age and readiness.

Working together in English

International students are welcome, with fluent conversational English required for instructions, group discussion and expressing needs.

Who might enjoy this camp?

  • For children interested in space, model rockets or engineering and hands-on problem solving.
  • For campers able to work in English, ask for help and manage shared residential life.
  • Before choosing the advanced program, consider its more involved missions and activity-specific medical restrictions.

Fluent conversational English is required. Nine-year-olds must be enrolled in or have completed grade 4; advanced underwater activities have additional medical requirements.
