Combine sensors, code and machine learning in a demonstrable engineering system.
UCLA’s IoT engineering-design course uses the Samueli School of Engineering’s platform. Students explore microsensors, neural networks and motion recognition, develop an open-ended project through coding and experiments, and explain results in a report, video and live presentation.
CAMP-CA-021

UCLA Office of Summer Sessions and Samueli School of Engineering
A UCLA-run Summer Precollege Focus Series course, separate from iD Tech.
Engineering 1IT carries 2 UCLA units and a letter grade; contact an advisor about any certificate.
Use common IoT sensors and explore how hardware data enters a software system.
Learn foundational model concepts and apply algorithms to sensor tasks.
Connect hardware and software through a C-programming workshop and lab experiments.
Explore motion patterns relevant to navigation; develop a chosen system and present a report, video and live demonstration.
Students receive an IoT kit and accessories and must bring a Mac or Windows laptop to every class.
Learn from researchers and industry guests about sensors, machine learning and engineering applications.
Project work and attendance are assessed under the course’s letter-grade requirements.
Current requirements include GPA 3.2+ and a statement of physics, calculus, programming and electronics experience. This commuter course provides no housing; contact an advisor for 2027 requirements.
2027 fees, additional charges and cancellation terms: contact an advisor.
International students may apply, but the Summer Precollege Focus Series does not qualify for an F-1 visa. The student’s permitted participation under their immigration status must be checked first.
Do not assume another UCLA program’s housing or visa arrangements apply; families must arrange off-campus accommodation, supervision and transport.
Successful completion allows no more than two absences. Application statements should be authentic student work; the program discourages generative-AI-written responses.
Discuss this camp and participation arrangements with an ASCWORLD education adviser.
