Explore mathematics beyond high school through proofs, discussion and guided inquiry.
SUMaC, run by Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies, offers intensive enrichment for well-prepared high-school students. Each student joins either abstract algebra and number theory or algebraic topology, developing understanding through lectures, daily problem sets and a final research presentation. Courses carry no credit or grades.
CAMP-CA-026

Stanford University’s Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies
A university-run specialist mathematics program, distinct from Summer Session’s credit-bearing courses.
Completion provides a SUMaC certificate and written instructor evaluation; no high-school or university credit is awarded.
Program I approaches abstract algebra through constructions, planar-pattern classification and structural symmetry.
Program I explores number theory through integers, modular arithmetic, cryptography and error-correcting codes.
Program II studies properties preserved under continuous deformation, using algebraic ideas such as groups.
Build mathematical arguments through daily problem sets, assistant-led discussion and guided inquiry, then present the work.
Admissions assigns Program I or II based on preference and preparation; each participant takes one track.
The focus is sustained mathematical understanding and proof, without academic credit or course grades.
Residential staff with mathematics backgrounds continue the conversation through meals, discussion and shared activities.
Residential participants must remain under 18. Program I requires strong proof preparation; Program II normally needs deeper experience. Application includes a proof-based exam, and students must complete responses independently.
2027 fees, additional charges and cancellation terms: contact an advisor.
International students may apply. English fluency is required, but TOEFL/IELTS submissions are not. Transcripts and recommendations must be in English or accompanied by translations.
Full residence and arrival/departure on designated dates are required; no commuting or concurrent programs. Residence halls have no air conditioning.
The program arrangement includes housing, meals, course materials and listed trips. SFO transfers run only on designated arrival/departure days and at set times.
As noncredit enrichment, visa arrangements must be checked against program guidance and individual status. Contact an advisor for 2027 fees and deadlines. Application fees/deposits are nonrefundable and installment plans are unavailable.
