MCA Academy

Portland, Oregon

Small-class secondary education combining college preparation, practical science, music and collaborative learning.

Campus setting

School introduction

MCA Academy began in 1974 with 101 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Its Portland campus provides education from preschool through high school. The school emphasizes teachers knowing students as individuals, attending to academic progress as well as social and emotional development. Small classes and cooperation with families are longstanding parts of its approach.

As students move through the secondary years, academic work is linked with preparation for college and adult life. Discussion, team assignments, sports and community service provide practice in communication, collaboration and responsibility. Students from varied cultural backgrounds learn together.

Curriculum

Middle-school learning centers on English, mathematics, science and social studies, alongside team projects and physical education. Technology supports collaboration, with Grades 6–12 using online educational tools. Science teaching emphasizes observation and practical work; published examples include biological dissection, chemical reactions and investigations of mass and force. Choir develops vocal technique, music reading and performance, while electives and outdoor learning vary by schedule.

High-school English combines vocabulary, grammar and writing structure with novels, poetry, drama, presentations and group assignments. Mathematics placement follows ability, with a pathway through algebra, geometry, college-preparatory mathematics, trigonometry and precalculus. The school also lists AP, honors and dual-credit opportunities; some AP subjects are delivered online. Government, economics, U.S. history and engineering broaden the academic program.

An academic advisor selects short-term classes around student interests, prerequisites and available places. Visits of up to six weeks, and those longer than six weeks but shorter than a semester, do not provide formal high-school credit or official transcripts. Contact an advisor for the proposed timetable, activities and learning records.

  • Bible and Christian studies form part of school life. Visits of up to six weeks may require Leadership class and weekly chapel; programs longer than six weeks require English, Leadership and weekly chapel.
  • Students staying longer than six weeks must bring a laptop or Chromebook; an iPad does not meet this requirement.
