School introduction

The school’s history began in 1867 through the work of Hawaii’s Queen Emma. Its downtown Honolulu setting connects Hawaiian heritage with a global educational outlook.

Personalized learning, close teacher relationships and social-emotional development are central to the school. Its K–12 program is moving forward as a coeducational community while retaining its traditions of care, responsibility and service.

Curriculum

Lower-school study combines literacy, mathematics and science with world languages, STEM, visual arts, music and physical education. Practical tasks, collaboration and reflection help students become more independent learners.

Upper-school options include college-preparatory, honors and AP study, inquiry-based STEAM research, the arts, global leadership and career exploration. ESL is available in the regular international program; contact an advisor about semester students’ courses and activities.
