School introduction

SHA began in 1957 and developed from a small school into a community with preschool, elementary, middle and high school divisions. Learning by doing is central to its approach: cross-subject projects help students practise independent thinking, communication and problem-solving.

Academic progress, social development and responsibility are cultivated together. Local and international students share lessons and campus traditions, including concerts, sports, cultural celebrations and service projects.

Curriculum

K–5 pupils study English reading and writing, mathematics, science, history, Spanish, art, music, computing and PE. Early phonics, number sense and practical demonstrations develop into extended writing, multi-step problems and research presentations. Spanish begins in kindergarten.

Grades 6–8 continue English, mathematics, science, history and Spanish, with art, band, health and PE, and computer science. History includes researched presentations in character; computing progresses from visual programming toward Python. Science uses experiments and problem-based investigations.

Grades 9–12 offer college-preparatory courses, honors, AP and electives across English, mathematics, laboratory sciences, social sciences, languages, arts and computing. Some courses are in-person, hybrid or online. Contact an advisor about the subjects and projects available during a short-term placement.

  • Bible is part of the regular curriculum and students participate; chapel is also part of school life. The school says students are not required to adopt a belief. Contact an advisor about the arrangements for short-term students.
