GM School

Chestnut Ridge, New York

A 3–6-month high-school visit linking academic blocks with arts, practical work and nature.

School introduction

GM is a private Waldorf school in Chestnut Ridge, Rockland County, New York, founded in 1950 and celebrating its first high-school graduating class in 1973. Its high-school division serves grades 9–12 and develops independent thinking and collaboration through academic, artistic and practical learning.

The approximately 11-acre school campus sits within a larger wooded community. Forests, fields and nature observation extend the classroom, while the New York metropolitan area offers cultural resources for educational outings. The approach combines thought, emotional development and practical skills.

The high-school profile reports NYSAIS and AWSNA accreditation. The school does not rank students or grant academic awards; its approach combines broad academics and the arts with honours and some college-credit courses.

Curriculum

High school combines multi-week morning subject blocks with continuing classes. English I–IV and literary blocks include poetry, Shakespeare, the novel and American literature. Humanities include history, philosophy and ethics. Mathematics spans algebra, geometry, calculus and statistics, with sciences such as human biology, botany, biochemistry, thermodynamics, mechanics and electromagnetism.

Grades 10 and 12 take part in full stage productions, developing character work, speech, movement and collaboration. Seniors undertake a year-long independent project and a spring internship. Other subjects are distributed across high school; ask an advisor about grade, term and prerequisites rather than assuming access for every visitor.

Arts, music and movement include practical and visual arts, chorus, band or orchestra, eurythmy and physical education. Electives include ceramics, photography, clothing design and programming. The school offers honours and some college-credit courses, but does not offer AP or IB.

Individual visits last three to six months, with a minimum stay of three months. Unaccompanied students must be high-school students aged 15–18. Available blocks, theatre, trips and other activities depend on grade placement and dates; contact an advisor for the actual study plan.

  • The minimum stay is three months. The school’s grades 9–12 structure does not guarantee visitor entry to every grade; ask an advisor about grade eligibility, English support and start dates.
  • Ask an advisor about school-community homestay or day arrangements. For unaccompanied students, day attendance requires verification of school approval, guardianship and transport. Ask about hosts, meals, transport and costs.
