School overview

Portland School (Oregon) · OES School is an independent college-preparatory school in Portland, Oregon, with boarding for Grades 9–12. Students from different countries share a campus and learn to manage their time, live across cultures and contribute to their community. The school values curiosity, independent thought and initiative, connecting classroom study with artistic interests, athletics and community participation.

Curriculum

The high-school curriculum spans English, history and social studies, mathematics, science, world languages, religion and philosophy, and visual, performing and musical arts. Inquiry and student choice are central to the approach. Increasing academic challenges help students strengthen research, expression and independent-learning skills, while longer projects provide room to investigate personal interests in depth.

Science through investigation

Science begins with observation and testable questions. Students plan investigations, collect and analyse information, and draw conclusions from evidence. The foundational sequence covers physics, chemistry and biology, followed by semester electives in Grades 11–12. Recently offered examples include data science, engineering, genetics and computational physics. Actual options depend on grade, prerequisites and the courses offered during the chosen semester.

Design and hands-on learning

The EC3 Design Center connects spaces for thinking, making and practical exploration. It supports project-based learning in which students discuss ideas, test approaches and refine their work. Collaboration and reflection are part of the process: an unsuccessful attempt becomes information for the next version, helping students develop confidence as problem-solvers.

Arts, athletics and interests

Student life includes interests such as robotics, theatre, photography, music and service. High-school sports range from soccer, cross-country, volleyball and basketball to track, tennis, ski racing and fencing. Artistic opportunities include painting, sculpture, digital media and performance. Participation depends on the season, timetable and relevant requirements.

Campus and boarding life

The approximately 59-acre campus combines trees and pathways with learning and residential spaces. Dormitory common areas include study rooms, lounges, kitchens and laundry facilities; campus amenities include sports fields, a track, courts, fitness spaces and music rooms. Community dinners and gatherings help boarders connect beyond lessons. Individual room assignments and accommodation arrangements are confirmed during admission.

Support for boarding students

Faculty dorm parents support residential life, alongside a counsellor, nurse, learning-resource coordinator and international-student resource coordinator. Student residential leaders also help peers settle into the community and communicate with adults. This network connects academic support, daily routines and peer relationships as students adjust to studying away from home.
