UCHS School

Scotch Plains, New Jersey

Find the right academic challenge through subject-level placement and varied ways to learn.

Campus setting

School introduction

UCHS opened in 1962 as separate boys’ and girls’ schools sharing one building, later becoming a coeducational high-school community. Its traditions emphasize respect, responsibility, honesty, compassion and community, alongside technology-supported college preparation.

A distinctive feature is subject-by-subject academic placement. A student can pursue a higher level in a particular strength while studying other subjects at a suitable pace. Teachers also use varied ways to assess understanding, allowing students to demonstrate their abilities through analysis, discussion and collaborative projects.

Curriculum

Regular Grades 9–12 study includes English, history and social studies, mathematics, laboratory science, world languages and PE. English continues through all four years. Mathematics covers algebra, geometry and Algebra II. Biology and chemistry form the science foundation, with options such as environmental science, anatomy and physiology, or physics. Languages include Spanish, French, Italian and Mandarin.

Courses are organized across six learning levels, from foundational support to AP, with movement based on performance. Freshmen also take writing, and sophomores take math essentials. Electives in the arts, technology and other academic fields broaden individual schedules.

A partner platform adds fully online AP and specialist electives, studied during scheduled sessions in the school library. Full-year programmes, online electives and short-term classroom placements have different arrangements; contact an advisor for a specific timetable.

  • The regular high-school programme requires four years of religion courses for graduation. Contact an advisor about religion classes and worship arrangements for short-term students.
