FLS School
Torrance, California
A clear progression through school connects language, science, music and outdoor learning.
School introduction
Founded in 1957, FLS serves children through grade 8 and organizes grades 5–6 as a distinct bridge between elementary and middle school. A library, computer lab, music room, playing areas and courtyards support lessons and broader school activities.
Its educational goals emphasize lifelong learning, clear communication and responsible relationships. Respect, empathy, creativity, courage and integrity are developed through increasingly independent assignments, presentations and opportunities to lead.
Curriculum
Elementary English builds phonics, comprehension and writing, while mathematics progresses from number sense to multiplication, division and multi-step problems. Life, physical and Earth science are explored through experiments, cross-curricular writing and presentations.
Grades 5–6 begin departmental teaching, combining literature-based language arts with mathematics, science and social studies. Regular outdoor learning includes a grade-5 environmental trip and a grade-6 camp exploring aeronautics, rocketry and technology.
Grades 7–8 deepen inquiry, laboratory work and communication. Mathematics leads toward algebra, and history includes the development of the United States. Marine-biology and historical field experiences complement classroom study. Music, art, computing and physical education run across the divisions; contact an advisor about short-stay timetables, trips and instrumental activities.
- The regular program includes Bible study, weekly chapel and participation in an annual Sunday worship service. Contact an advisor about the arrangements that apply to short-term students.
