School introduction

CCS opened in Portland in 1947 with four teachers and pupils in grades 1–8. It later added high school and became independently incorporated in 1992. Its present campus connects the divisions in a community that values close relationships and participation.

Reading, writing, analysis and discussion are used to develop thinking skills. Teachers combine individual, small-group and whole-class approaches; middle-school advisers meet students daily to strengthen planning and study habits. Service and collaborative activities also shape secondary-school life.

Curriculum

Elementary learning develops reading, communication, problem-solving and technology use, supported by specialist art, music, physical education and library-media teaching. Middle school deepens English, mathematics, science and social studies while offering arts, practical subjects and physical education.

High-school subjects span English, mathematics, languages, science and social studies. Science choices include biology, environmental science, anatomy, chemistry and physics. Economics, government, personal finance, psychology and career exploration broaden social studies, alongside options such as cooking, drama, choir and yearbook.

Regular secondary learning includes group tasks, hands-on projects, field experiences and service, with AP and college-credit opportunities at high school. Contact an advisor about short-stay placement, actual course choices, off-campus activities and credit arrangements.

  • Bible or religion courses form part of regular learning, and the school holds weekly chapel. Contact an advisor about participation arrangements for short-term students.
