GFS School
Tucson, Arizona
Mastery-based learning in a natural campus setting, with practical projects in ecology, engineering and everyday life.
School introduction
Founded on former farmland in Tucson in 1933, GFS School retains an open, natural campus setting. Curiosity, mutual respect and a sense of community are central to its approach. Students are encouraged to build substantial knowledge, discover personal interests and put their learning to use in real situations.
In 2019 the school incorporated the ALL teaching approach, extending its tradition through more personalized learning. Progress is shaped by what a student has mastered, with challenge adjusted to individual development. Its educational aims include reasoned thinking, clear communication and meaningful contribution to the wider community.
Curriculum
Learning is mastery-based: students demonstrate understanding through tasks before moving forward, with further challenges used to deepen application. Multi-year content sequences connect earlier and later learning. Evidence-based writing, goal setting and independent work are emphasized, so placement is not determined solely by age or a fixed grade label.
The 2025–26 middle- and high-school course directory spans mathematics, science, English, social studies, technology and languages. Mathematics progresses from numeric operations and algebra to calculus and statistics. Science includes biology, chemistry, physics and topics such as marine biology. English combines language and composition with literature, poetry, creative writing and drama. Computer science, Chinese and French also feature, alongside a range of AP pathways.
Mini-courses translate learning into practical tasks: investigating campus plants and animals, improving a greenhouse, planning a realistic personal budget, building and testing bottle rockets, or programming a robot. Students observe, design, document, collaborate and present their work. Contact an advisor about the short-term timetable, current electives and activities.
